The day of Fischer's birth if you care to read it:
Fischer William Dunnihoo arrived after 25 hours of labor on April 25th. He weighed 9 pounds 9 ounces and was 22 inches long. I went to the doctor on Friday, my due date, and they hooked me up to all the monitors to see if I was having contractions and to check Fischer's heart rate. Everything looked good, but it didn't seem that I would be going into labor anytime soon. So the doctor called the hospital and they said they could induce me that day if we wanted to. So Matt and I talked about it and decided to go ahead and do it. We were ready to meet our son! We had no idea what a ride it would be.
They started the pitocin about 11:30 and the doctor came and broke my water at about 1:30. I was progressing and was feeling pretty good. I started to get some pretty good contractions around 4 or 5 and asked for an epidural around 8 that night. The epidural was wonderful, but was not taking on my right side. They uped the dosage and my left side went completely numb, I couldn't even move my left leg, but my right side still had a little feeling. The epidural had lowered my blood pressure and Fischer's heart rate kept slowing down, so they had to put me on oxygen. That mask was so annoying!!
Around midnight I was fully dialted and just lacked a little in the effacement department, so the nurses decided to have me go ahead and start pushing. I pushed a little but the I wasn't having strong enough contractions, so they stopped the pitocin and started it again hoping it would make them stronger. They had turned my epidural off when they had me pushing around midnight so when I started pushing again around 2, I was feeling it pretty good. There were 3 nurses in there trying to teach me how to push, but I wasn't doing too well. I pushed for 2 hours with nothing to show for it. Around 4 in the morning was when both of us broke down. I was afraid I was going to have to have a c-section just because I couldn't push right and Matt couldn't stand not being able to do something to help.
They turned my epidural back on and we waited until the morning to see the doctor. That's when my hero nurse arrived. She was amazing. She walked in my room and told me we were having a baby today. She encouraged me and told me I was doing great, unlike the nurses from the night before. She had me push a little more, then they decided to stop and start the pitocin one more time. If I didn't have him by noon they would do a c-section.
Around 11 we started pushing again. The nurse called the doctor in around 11:45 and I pushed for what seemed like forever. Everytime I would push Fischer's heart rate would go way low, sometimes even stop and they would tell me to breathe deep so he could get some oxygen. I was so scared, but the doctor said he was still doing fine. I still wasn't really having very strong contractions, but I was feeling the urge to push, so I kept pushing. Fischer was finally born at 12:43 right about the time when I felt like I couldn't handle it any longer. We all couldn't believe how big he was! They never told me this, but I think they thought he was in distress because our moms were waiting in the hall and they saw the peditrician running down the hall to our room. Turns out he was fine and was an 8-9 on the Apgar scale. The doctor said he was the size of a 2 month old. When they wheeled me from Labor and Delivery to Postpartum, the nurses were clapping for me, saying "That's her". I guess I had been the talk of the floor that day. It was quite an experience.
These next pictures are recent. He was 6 weeks old on Saturday.
He starting smiling so big just this last week. It was been so fun. He will just sit in his bouncer and smile and talk to you. He'll even smile at the walls if he finds something interesting there.
I love his little dimple on his right cheek. He gets that from his dad.
